MacBook Liquid Damage Repair

Act Fast — Every Minute Counts

Spilled water, tea, coffee or wine on your MacBook? The most important thing you can do right now is switch it off immediately and leave it off. Do not try to restart it. Do not plug in the charger.

Liquid damage is an emergency. The moment moisture reaches your MacBook’s logic board, corrosion begins — and it carries on even after the liquid has dried. The sooner your Mac is professionally cleaned and assessed, the better the chance of a full recovery.

I specialise in MacBook liquid damage repair at board level — using professional ultrasonic cleaning equipment and component-level diagnostics to recover Macs that other repairers have given up on.

What Happens to a MacBook After a Spill?

Most people assume that if their MacBook dries out, the problem goes away. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works.

When liquid enters a MacBook it spreads rapidly across the logic board, reaching capacitors, power management ICs, charging circuits, and soldered connections. Even a small amount of water or coffee leaves behind mineral deposits and conductive residue as it evaporates. These residues cause short circuits, corrode component pads, and can burn out chips that were working fine immediately after the spill.

Common faults that develop after liquid damage:

  • MacBook won’t turn on at all
  • Turns on but shuts down immediately
  • Battery not charging or not detected
  • Keyboard, trackpad or USB-C ports not working
  • No backlight or no display
  • Fans running at full speed constantly
  • Random restarts or crashes
  • Corrosion visible on the board or connectors
  • Burnt smell when powered on

Some of these symptoms appear immediately. Others develop over days or weeks as corrosion spreads. This is why acting fast — and not repeatedly trying to power the machine on — makes a significant difference to the outcome.

How I Repair Liquid-Damaged MacBooks

My approach to liquid damage repair goes well beyond what most repair shops offer. Rather than simply quoting for a new logic board (which can cost £400–£800+), I carry out a proper board-level investigation and restore as much as possible at component level.

Step 1 — Disassembly and initial inspection The MacBook is fully disassembled and the logic board removed. I carry out a visual inspection under a microscope to identify where liquid entered and which areas show corrosion or burn damage.

Step 2 — Ultrasonic cleaning The logic board is placed in a professional ultrasonic cleaner with a specialist cleaning solution. Ultrasonic waves agitate the fluid at high frequency, dislodging corrosion, mineral deposits and residue from every surface and crevice — including areas that can’t be reached with brushes or manual cleaning. The board is then thoroughly dried.

Step 3 — Diagnostic assessment Once clean and dry, the board is tested with professional diagnostic equipment. I use a Fluke meter, bench power supply, and specialist Apple diagnostic software to identify exactly which components or circuits have been damaged.

Step 4 — Component-level repair Using a JBC soldering station, ERSA rework tools, and an Amscope microscope for precision work, I replace or repair individual damaged components — whether that’s a blown fuse, a failed MOSFET, a damaged charging IC, or corroded connector pads. This is micro-soldering work that most high street shops simply cannot do.

Step 5 — Full functional test Before returning any Mac, I carry out a full functional test covering power, charging, display, keyboard, trackpad, USB-C ports, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and storage. You get your Mac back knowing it’s been properly checked — not just switched on and handed over.

What Are the Chances of Recovery?

Honestly? It depends on three things: what liquid spilled, how quickly the machine was switched off, and how soon it was brought in for repair.

  • Water spilled, switched off immediately, brought in within 24 hours — very high recovery rate
  • Coffee or tea (sugary / acidic) — slightly more corrosive but still very good outcomes with prompt treatment
  • Mac was left on or repeatedly restarted after the spill — more component damage likely, but still often repairable
  • Spill happened days or weeks ago — corrosion will have spread further; more components may need replacement, but recovery is still often possible

I will always give you an honest assessment after diagnosis. If the repair isn’t cost-effective for the age or spec of your machine, I’ll tell you — and I won’t charge unnecessary fees for work that won’t result in a fix.

Why Choose AppleMacMender for Liquid Damage Repair?

Board-level capability. I repair at component level using professional micro-soldering equipment and an ultrasonic cleaner — tools that most repair shops don’t have. This means I can fix faults that others class as “unrepairable.”

20+ years of electronic engineering experience. I trained in Electrical and Electronic Engineering to degree level and have been repairing Apple Mac hardware for over two decades. Complex liquid damage faults are something I’ve diagnosed and fixed many, many times.

Significantly cheaper than Apple. Apple’s standard response to liquid damage is a whole logic board replacement, which typically costs £400–£800 or more. Board-level component repair is almost always a fraction of that cost.

Transparent pricing. You’ll receive a fixed quote before I start any repair work. No surprises when you collect.

Fast turnaround. Most liquid damage repairs are completed within 2–4 days depending on the extent of the damage and parts required. I’ll keep you updated throughout.

Based in Southport. Conveniently located at 81 Kensington Road, Southport, PR9 0RZ — easy to reach from Formby, Ormskirk, Crosby, Liverpool and across Merseyside.

What to Do Right Now

If you’ve just had a spill:

  1. Switch the MacBook off immediately — hold the power button until it shuts down
  2. Do not plug in the charger
  3. Do not try to restart it — even once
  4. Turn it upside down to let excess liquid drain away from the board
  5. Bring it in as soon as possible — or call me to discuss

The faster you act, the better the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

My MacBook got wet two weeks ago. Is it too late to repair? It’s not too late, but the longer liquid damage is left untreated, the more corrosion spreads across the board. Even older spills are worth investigating — bring it in for a diagnosis and I’ll give you an honest assessment of what’s recoverable.

Apple quoted me for a whole logic board replacement. Do I really need that? Not necessarily. Apple’s standard approach to liquid damage is to replace the entire logic board, which is the most expensive option. In many cases the actual damage is limited to specific components that can be repaired or replaced at a fraction of the cost.

Can you recover my data if the MacBook won’t turn on? In many cases, yes. MacBook SSDs are soldered to the board, but I can often access the storage separately or recover it as part of the repair process. If data recovery is a priority, mention this when you contact me.

How much does MacBook liquid damage repair cost? Diagnosis starts from £75. The total cost depends on the extent of the damage and which components need replacing. I’ll give you a fixed quote after diagnosis before any repair work begins. See guide prices →

Do you repair all MacBook models? Yes — I repair all MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models, including Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).

How long does the repair take? Most liquid damage repairs are completed within 2–4 days. If specialist parts are required it may take a little longer, but I’ll always keep you updated.

What if you can’t fix it? If after diagnosis I determine the Mac is beyond economical repair, I’ll explain exactly why and won’t charge for unnecessary work beyond the diagnostic fee. I’ll also advise on data recovery options where possible.
